French mail order catalogs and clothing advertisements offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends.
Smocks were still worn in the 1960s, especially the eraly 1960s, at French schools, but their use was declining, especially by boys. Front buttoning styles were becoming increasingly common, even for the girls. We also note polyester materials being used. The main color for boys was blue, but girls wore smocks in a wide range of colors.
A mail order company offered a variety of school smocks, all front buttoning for both boys and girls. Blue was the dominant color for boys, but there were other colors as well. Many were apparently made with polyester as "nylon" appears several times on the page. I'm not sure which catalog this was.
The "manteau baby" was the most popular style of coat for the younger child. John F. Kennedy Jr even wore one inthe United States.
French magazines in 1962 pictured children wearing classically styled coats called "manteau baby". The coats were worn by children 4-8 years of age, both boys and girls.
