Hunkins Underwaist Diagram (United States, 1904)

Figure 1.-- There is a technical diagram of the waist advertised in a 1904 newspaper. It opened up and flattened out at the top of the ad. This fold up shows exactly where the buttons, straps, and garter tabs are located (although you can't see the actual pin tubes). But the pin tubes are described in the text below with the mention of Hunkins. This describes Hunkins's invention of the pin tube and the various alternative methods of attachment which were used on other waists.

The accompanying diagram (figure 1) illustrates the six-button opening down the chest, the reinforced armhole openings, the four reinforcement straps with waist buttons for support of trousers or skirts, and the over-shoulder reinforcement straps that join under the arms to hold pin-on hose supporters. Instead of a button under the arms, the M Waist features "Hunkins' Patent Pin Tube for attaching supporters". The pin tube itself is not very clear in the drawing, but the text makes it presence there quite clear.
