Unbranded Suspender Garters (1904)

Figure 1.-- We note ads for boys's waists, both of which appeared on the same page of the 'Syracuse Post Standard' (May 24, 1904, page 5). Stocking supporters were commonly advertised in local newspapers like the Syracuse paper. The first ad on the page and slightly more prominent is a support device referred to as "Suspender Garters for Boys". This is another term for a suspender waist that combines suspenders for knee trousers with hose supporters for long stockings.

There are cast-offs with buttons for fastening to the trousers and double-pendant hose supporters that attach on the sides as would be the case with normal underwaists with garter tabs. The color of the susporters and side straps (non-elastic part) is black while the elastic webbing (for both the suspenders and the garters) appears to be a striped white or gray.

Construction

There are cast-offs with buttons for fastening to the trousers and double-pendant hose supporters that attach on the sides as would be the case with normal underwaists with garter tabs. The color of the susporters and side straps (non-elastic part) is black while the elastic webbing (for both the suspenders and the garters) appears to be a striped white or gray.

Age

We learn from another ad (without picture) that the age range is 2 to 14 years. IN 1904 nearly all boys up to the age of about 14 years wore knee pants with long stockings and needed a support garment to hold them up. After 13-13 boys gradually began wearing long pants. This was especially the case for boys who left school and began working. Some boys conginued wearing knee pants until about 17 or even 18 years of age.

Gender

Suspender waists or "suspender garters" were much preferred by boys, especially older boys, because, originally, they were made for boys only and were not worn by girls. Later on, suspender waists were modified in styles that were also sold to girls. But the term, suspender waist, or suspender garters, seems to applied mainly to boys.

Ad Copy Text

Here is the ad copy text text: "Suspender Garters for Boys, 25 cents and 50 cents. Points: (1) READY TO WEAR--Our special button fits fight into the button-holes in trousers band. (2)NEVER PULL OFF--This button will never pull off, and yet it will not tear the button hole. (3)SUPPORTS ALL CLOTHING FROM SHOULDER--No bands or bars; makes a boy straight, healthy and comfortable. (4) DURABILITY--High grade suspender elastic wed is used in both shoulder and hose supporters. First hose supporter ever produced using wide strong suspender elastic web." [Note: These supporters are much sturdier and wider and stronger than the average pin-on supporters that many boys wore attached to underwaists.]
