American Patterns for Boys Clothings: School Clothes (1917)

school clothes 1917
Figure 1.-- Here are three outfits for boys' 'school clothes'. The patterns were offered by the 'Ladies Home Journal' (September 1917). These are not outfits we see very commonly in the photographic record at school. We do not yet have the ad copy from the page.

Here are three outfits for boys' "school clothes". The patterns were offered by the Ladies Home Journal (September 1917), page 88. Mothers were encouraged to sew clothes for younger boys who were going back to school in September. The three different patterns for schoolboys' clothes all feature tunic suits with short trousers and long stockings. The suit on the left is a belted tunic with Peter Pan collar. The suit in the center is unbelted with the same style collar. The suit on the right is a sailor-sit tunic. Notice the high shoes that all three show. Tunics were popular garments in 1917, but they were not very commom for schoolwear. These are not outfits we see very commonly in the photographic record at school. I think these clothes would be for smaller boys in the early grades of imary school--probably no older than 8 or 9.
