Workhouse Roles


Figure 1.--This photograph was taken at Crumpsall Workhouse, probably about 1910. The frocks were for summer wear and were as simple and inexpensive to buy as possible. The girls probably wore identical frocks.

While HBC has been able to find relatively little information on work houses. Some information has been found posted concerning the staffs and inmates (as the poor soles in these institutions were called). While the information is criptic, it does provide a rough idea of who was insyituionalized in these facilities.

Cirencester Work House

Note that the work houses were not massive institutions. Most like this one in Cirencester cared for 100-200 persons, interestingly more men than women Note the number who for classified as "aglab" (agricultural laborers). The number of children is also notable. Note how young they began their studies and were classified as "scholars".

1851 census

The CIRENCESTER UNION WORKHOUSE, Gloucestershire, in a 1851 CENSUS had 257 persons, including 138 males and 119 females.
