English Children's Literature: Unsigned Books

Figure 1.--Many English children's books were unsigned. 'Peter's Adventure' was published around 1936-37 as is a typical example.

Unsigned Works

We note that many children's books were published without the author's name. We assume that these books were printed by publishers who contracted writers to do a variety of formula pieces. The lack of attribution may also reflect the low regarded accorded to children's books in the early 20th century. The illustrators are also often not indicated.

Examples

Peter's Adventure

'Peter's Adventure' is a good example of English children's literature. It was was published around 1936-37 as is a typical example. I find the cover rather intriguing as the suave looking boy in the boat gazes on Peter regardingly. Peter by contrast looks quite naive and innocent with his sun hat, satchel, tidy clothes and cute socks. He has run away from home and comes across Tom, a riff-raff of a boy.
