Studio Cabinet Card Serrated Edges (1893)

Figure 1.-- The cabinent card here was identifed in pencil on the back, "1893 Christmas Day Clyde Harris & Clyde Jewel". We are guessing the boys are cousins. They were photographed with a little dog. We do not know to which boy it belonged.

Some cabinent cards has serrated/scalloped edges. This was not a common style of mount, but we do note some. We do not yet have details on the chronlogy of these cards. We do not yet sure when they first appeared. So far all the American examples we have found are from the 1880s and 90s. We note this card from 1893. It looks American, although we do not see a state indicated on the card which was usually the case. Most of these serrated edge cards we have found are American. We are not yet sure if they were common in other countries and if the chronology was the same. A German reader tells us, "I have seen a few of these cards with serrated edges, but they were not very common. I have only one CDV from the 1870s with a scalloped edge in my extensive collection." Sometimes mount styles used for cabinent cards were also used for CDVs. We have not yet found scalloped CDVs, but our assessment is very preliminary. The boys here are Clyde Harris and Clyde Jewel, probably cousins. Thevboys wear knee pants suits which seem go have some Norfolk styling with small floppy bow.
