Boys' Uniforms: Sports and Athletics--Badminton

Figure 1.--Madminton is today promarily played in school gym classes.

Badminton is named after the seat of the Dukes Beaufort in the south of Gloucestershire. HBC had thought it was a French court game. We do not at this time fully understand the historical background. There are many similarities with tennis, but it is played with a shuttlecock rather than a ball and this does not require such a formal court. It was at the thirn of the 20th century a popular game that both genders could play socially. It is now prinmarily a gym class activity in most countries.

Origin

Badminton is named after the seat of the Dukes Beaufort in the south of Gloucestershire. Badminton was the Duke's stately Palladian edifice of 1682 with a fine park. Not only was the game of badminton named after it, but a kind of claret cup. HBC had thought it was a French court game. We do not at this time fully understand the historical background.

Description

Badminton is played by two or four players, either indoors or outdoors on amarked spave 44 ft long by 20 ffet wide for the four player game and a smaller space for two players. A net is fixed across the middle of the court which is 5 ft high at the center and 5 1/2 ft at the posts. The game is played with a shuttle cock made initially of cork, but now of rubber with feathers attached. The huttlecock is driven backa nd forth by rackets. When one of the players fails to return the shuttlecock, a point is scored. Fifteen points wins the game, providing the wunner's scores exceeds that of the loser by at least 2 points. The racket is string with fine gut (now nylon) and weighs about 6 ounces.

Tennis

There are many similarities with lawn tennis, but it is played with a shuttlecock rather than a ball and this does not require such a formal court.

Conventions

It was at the turn of the 20th century a popular game that both genders could play socially. It is now prinmarily a gym class activity in most countries.

Clothing

HBC knows little about early badminton costumes. We believed at the tirn of the century that men played in long flannel pants and women in long dresses. Today boys anf girls generally play in in a school gym class wearing gym uniforms.
