Closed-toe Sandals: Styles--Double Bar Without Center Straps

Although not a common style, double bar sandals were made without center straps. HBC has noted this style in the 1910s. It appears to have been more of a dressy shoe style than a play sandal. They were mostly made in black patent leather. They were worn by boys and girls, but generally younger children. They were mostly worn with white long stockings. This stylecis a good example of the lack of gender specializationnin children's footwear at the turn of the century. Both boys and girls could wear this style, atleas younger boys. Today boys' and girls' shoes, especially dress shoes have very different styles. Boys might wear suits and girls dresses, but when it came to footwear and stockings, they might wear the same styles and colors as is the case in figure 1.
