Strap Shoes: Design Cuts

Figure 1.--This boy in a photograph probably taken in the 1920s wears ankle strap shoes with a design cut out.

Some strap shoes rather than a rounded open area in the front, had an iregular design cut out. This was not a common style, but it did appear in the 1920s and 30s. I do not know if this was more commonly a boys or girls fashion. It does appear to be mostly in dress shoes and not the play shoe versions. As it was not a common style, HBC has been able to acquire only limited infprmation.

Chronology

HBC has little information on the strap shoes with designs cut out of the front. I believe this style appeared in the 1920s and 30s, but this is just a preliminary assessment at this time.

Conventions

HBC has little information on this design cut style. I do not know if it was more common for boys or girls. In fact I do not know if these shoes were sold in gender speciic styles or only as generic children's shoes.

Designs

Little information is available on the designs. One design is a kind of point at the center of the cutout area (figure 2).

Color

I believe that the design cut was primarily for black dress shoes.

Age

The design cut shoes may have primarily been for younger children, at least younger boys. This would mean boys from about 2 to 6 years of age, but this is only an initial assessment.

Clothing

I am not sure what type of clothes were worn with these shoes. The boy hear wears a white sailor suit. They were probably worn with other dressy outits such as short pants velvet suits, romers, and tunic suits although very little real information is available.

Boys wearing these design cut strap shoes generally wore them with short white ankle socks. Some boys wore long stockings. They usually wore either short or kneepants.

Figure 2.--Note the design cut at the front of the shoe in this enlargement. Also note the closures on the ankle straps.
