German Democratic Republic Boys' Tights: Homewear Conventions

Figure 1.--This drawing shows a boy wearing short pants with tights. He is drawng at home for fun or perhaps a homework assignment. Note that his sister does not wear tights. The illustration came from a 1963 DDR school book for beginning readers "Lesen und Lehrnen".

We have only limited information at this time on tights as homewear. We do not know how common this was or the chronological trends involved. Avaialble images do show boys wearing tights at home. They are quite various. The boys are shown doing their home work, playing, listening to television and many other activities. At home boys wore tights with both long and short pants. GFR sources report that German boys and girls at home might have even worn tights without pants. We have little information on this and can not confirm he ages of the boys involved. One reader suggests iy was only very young pre-school boys. We do not know if this was also the case in DDR homes. Presumably this was most common in the colder months. Hopefully our DDR readers will provide more information on such conventions and their on experiences.
