German Tights: Lederhosen

Figure 1.--This German boy wears red tights as part of a colod weather outfit with knicker-like ski pants.

Lederhosen, both short and knee-length styles were also worn. I'm not sure how lederhosen have vaired in popularity. I believe that many boy since the 1960s have wrn jeans that earlier would have worn lederhosen. Younger boys wearing lederhosen might wear tights with them.

Main Lederhosen Page

Lederhosen or leather pants which are one of the styles most associated with German boys. They first in the German state of Bavaria. I'm not sure when they were first worn. I assume they have originated with knee breeches and gradually become shorter. Thus you would assune they probably originated un the 18th Century. There are two types of lederhose, short pants and knicker-like pants. Lederhosen were also worn in rural parts of Austria and Switzerland. They are often associated with the local popular folk music. Boy scouts and other youth groups in those countries, like the Hitler Youth, also sometimes wore them too. Boys in the 1920s-40s wore them much as modern boys wear jeans.

Hosiery with Lederhosen

Lederhosen are worn with a variety of hosiery. Some boys wore a comination ankle sock and calf band. Other boys wore knee socks. During the winter, younger boys weore tights with lederhosen. Although not as common as with other types of hosiery, tights were worn with lederhosen. HBC has few details, but they seemed to have been most poular with the longer knee-length type of lederhosen.

Two Types of Lederhosen

German boys have worn tights with both types of lederhosen.

Short lederhosen

Younger boys wore short pants-style lederhosen with tights during the winter. They wore both colored and patterened tights.

Knee-length lederhosen

More common was to wear tights with knee-length lederhosen. The knee-length style was a popular winter style. Thus tights were a popular choice for hosiery. Some what older boys who did not liike tye idea od wearing short pants or short pamts-type lederhosen with thoghts, were willing to wear the, with knee-length type lederhosen.
