Boys' Ringlet Curls: Mid-19th Century--the 1860s

Figure 1.--This image is undated, but we believe that it was taken in the late 1860s or early 70s. Notice the base of the stand behind the boy that helped to steady him for the portrait. Click on the image for a detailed discussion. Image courtesy of the RG collection.

More photographs become available during the 1860s. A much larger number of images of amuch higher quality are available for the 1860s. These images clearly show that ringlet curls were being worn by boys by the 1860s. Unfortunately many of these images are not dated. It is especially difficult to destinguish between 1860s and early 1870s images. Thus HBC can not yet precisely define the chronology of mid-19th century ringlet curls. Wenotice both breached and unbreached boys wearing ringets, sometimes quite long ringlets in the 1860s. We do not yet have sufficent images or other information to assess what age boys wore rnglets in the 1860s, but suspect that most boys had their curls cut by about age 6 years. Because wehave relatively few 1860s images, we can not yet asess the types of ringlets worn. Also we are not yet sure of gender trends. We believe that irls also wore ringlet curls in the 1860s. We are not sure to what extent, if any, boys' ringlets varied from girls' ringlets. We know that there were differencs between countrie, but we Are not yet able to asses thoise differences. We do note that ringlets for boys and long hair in general, were much less common in Germany than America, France, and England. We note on portrait of an unidentified California boy in curls wearing a kind of transitional garment consisting of a dress-like bodice with trousers. The portrait is undated, but was probably taken in the early-1860. We note English boy Edwin Cranshay with ringlet curls done with a side part during 1864. He was part of a wealthy family.
