Plot

Alex is a 12 year old school boy. Both his parents are busy with their job therefore Alex spends lots of time with his grandma whom he calls Rose. One day he finds her house raided, his grandma tied and gagged. She makes him promise not to tell anybody for fear that she would end up in an old people’s home.

The villains are Evert and Lucas, two older teenagers with severe emotional problems. They have been abandoned by their father and their stepfather bullies them. They blackmail Alex. If he informs the police his grandma may come to harm. The are much bigger than Alecx and taunt and bully him, they destroy his clarinet. They extort his savings even make him snatch purses from old ladies. He gets caught up in a net of blackmail and petty theft from which there seems to be no way out.

After a road accident a blind lady brings him into her house and helps him dress his wounds. He robs her of 500 guilders, which is the weekly allowance set by his tormentors for their "protection" of his grandmother. Then, finally overcome by remorse, he takes Rose into his confidence and promises to tell the police and his parents.

Leaving her house at night he finds Evert and Lucas waiting for him. Very cunningly he entices them into his school and switches off the mains. He tries to get rid of them taking advantage of his familiarity with the building. A thrilling chase through dark halls and passages with threatening silences and frightening echos comes to an end when he corners them into a room and locks the door.

Assessment

The story sounds a bit like a tear jerker (‘remorse after robbing a blind lady’) but it isn’t. It is a sensitive account of the plight of a boy caught between dread and remorse and lacking opportunity to talk it over with adults in charge. The last part is an intensely thrilling pursuit has an unexpected ending.
