Life in the Balance (United States, 1955)

A Life in the Balance was a crime thriller directed by Harry Horner. It was shot in Mexico City. There are a lot of scenes from Mexico City's colorful carnival. The boy in the film wears casual shirts and jeans as was common in the 1950s. The movie was a crime thriller directed by Harry Horner. Lee Marvin dominates the action A Life in the Balance. He plays a psychoric murderer, who a curious Mexican boy follows--young José Perez. Jose's father, a musician played by Ricardo Montalban, is accused of an unexplained series of killings. His son is of course convinced of his farher's innosence. José Perez plays Paco Gomez. Antonio Carbajal also has a part.

Filmology

A Life in the Balance was a crime thriller directed by Harry Horner. This appears to be a popular title. We note two books with rge same title. One is by Scott Burton (19??) and the other by B.W. Sinclair (2001). Neither appaer to be connected with the film. Billy Wayne Sinclair's book, however, is about crime. He spent over 35 years behind bars, 7 of them on death row. He was in constant danger of being killed for exposing corruption both in the prison system and in the Louisiana legislature.

Setting

It was shot in Mexico City with a contemporary setting. There are a lot of scenes from Mexico City's colorful carnival.

Cast

The cast included: Ricardo Montalban (Antonio Gomez), Anne Bancroft (??), Lee Marvin (The Murderer), Jorge Trevino (Sergeant), Jose Torvay (Andres Martinez), José Perez (Paco Gomez), Pascual Garcia Pena (Porter), Carlos Muzquiz (Capt Saldana), and Antonio Carbajal (Pedro). José Perez was not Mexican, but a Cuban-born actor that played a lot of supporting roles in Hollywood films. Antonio Carbajal was Mexico's most noted child film star in the 1950s.

Plot

Although he got only third-billing on the marquee, Lee Marvin dominates the action A Life in the Balance. He plays a psychoric murderer, who curiois Mexican boy incounters--young José Perez. Jose's father, a musician played by Ricardo Montalban, is accused of an unexplained series of killings. His son is of course convinced of his farher's innosence. He has also come to the conclusion that Marvin is the killer and sets out to follow him so that he can prove it. Knowing the danger, José leaves a trail for the police to follow. He smashes police call boxes, a relic of the 1950s.

Costuming

The boy in the film wears casual shirts and jeans as was common in the 1950s. The jeans are similar to those worn by Amderican boys. The shirt looks more Mexican. Because of the elivation, it can get chilly in Mexico City at night.
