German Boy Choir Costumes: Munchner Chorbuben

Figure 1.--Muncher Chorbuben is a Munich choir. In this 1983 photograph, the choristers wear a uniform of red sweaters, black short pants, and white knee socks.

The Munchner Chorbuben is one of several German choirs. Boys from 8-18 years participated, despite the name of the choir. German contributors tell HBC that the word "Buben" in contemporary Germany has lost meaning of baby, it's now commonly used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland to speak of young boys. The choir is a relatively new choir, founded in 1952 by Fritz Rothschuh as an independent community without a boarding school. HBC has only limited information at this time.

Name

The Munchner Chorbuben (literally "Munich choir babies) is one of several German choirs. A reader writes, "'Chorbuben' does not means 'Choir babies', but into Austrian and south German language that means 'choir kids' or 'choir boys'. Boys from 8-18 years participated, despite the name of the choir. German contributors tell HBC that the word "Buben" in contemporary Germany has lost meaning of baby, it's now commonly used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland to speak of young boys. Another reader reports, "The word 'Buben' don't means babies but little boys and in modern German is often taken in the sence of kids. So Chorbuben means exactly "Choir of kids". Quite often too, parents refer to children as " Bubi ". That means darling. Another German reader tells us, "A Bub is a boy. Therefore choirboys. NOT a baby!

Foundation

The Muncher Chorbuben were founded March 7, 1952 by Fritz Rothschuh as an independent community without a boarding school.

Voluntary

Membership in the choir is completely voluntary.

Training

The choristers practice twice a week. They come from all quarters of Munich and suburbs to the choir rehearsal.

Music

The choir's repertoire (a capella and with instrumental accompaniement includes religious choral music of all styles, from old masters works to contemporary compositions, as well as gospels and spirituals. A particular emphasis is also given to interpreting madrigals, works from the classical, romantic and modern periods and folkloric songs.

Performances

The Munchner choir boys have reached international audience thru more than 3,000 appearances during the about 100 concert tours they made in almost all European countries. They also traveled to Turkey, the United States, Canada and Japan. Their furthest tour led them 1994 to Australia, where they (as first the first German boys choir) performed with great success in the cities of Sidney, Melbourne and Adelaide. A local newapaper reported on a performance held by the choir in a old people's home of Sidney " The little Singers of Munich have written a piece of history ". The young members of the choir have been performing for various statesmen and religious dignitaries, were twice the guests of the German Federal president at the Hammerschmidt House of Bonn and gave a concert in the Vatican for not less than four different popes !

Costume

The Muncher Chorbuben, at least in the 1980s wore a uniform of red sweaters, black short pants, and white knee socks. One contributor tells me that the entire choir wore the uniform, including the older boys up to 18 years of age. We do not have any more recent photographs of the choir.

Girls

Today the Choir not only has Chorbuben but also Chormdchen (choir girls)/

Web Site

The Choir has a very informative web site.
