French Easter Traditions: 1946 Post Card

Figure 1.--Tis "Happy Easter" French post card was made in 1946. The boy looks to be about 5 years old and wears a romper suit called a brboteuse in French. As in other countries, the egg is an important part of the Easter symbolism.

This poscard was made about 1946 by the studio Mignot for Noyer product. The same postcard was produced in color. It seems that a huge quantity of this sort of card was made with children and easter eggs, especiallyafter World War II in the late 1940s. I'm not sure if this one was actually sold commercailly. Some of the black and white photos used to make these cards were were reserved for the parents and were not printed at the back. A French reader reports, "I did several photos. On three I am alone. Other are of my brother and me . I realy don't know if they were printed and sold commercially. I still have a vague memory of having these photographs taken in the studio. A little girl and another boy called Rémi were with us. The last photo was realy published. It was for an advertisement about pupils in school. Often these photos were modified. The hair might be made a bit darker, the color of the clothes, ect. The manager of Mignot studio was one my Parents' friends. He did many photos for magazines."

The romper outfit the boy here wears is a traditional one-piece french romper ( barboteuse ) for primarily boys 1-5 years old, but boys up to 7 years old wore them in the 1940s and early 50s. The one here was white andworn with dark blue strap shoes ( sandalletes ).
