Blackpool has a wide range of tourist attractions. English seaside resorts are famous for their holiday piers with a range of attractions. The rides and other games particularly appeal to children, but there are attractions for the entire family. Blackpool has three piers. The North pier is the oldest built in 1863. The Central Pier was built soon after in 1868. The South pier is the newest, built in 1893. Blackpool also has a Tower, the most prominant feature of the resort. It was built in 1894. The Blackpool Tower is a 518-foot replica of Paris' Eiffel Tower. It was painted gold in 1994 as part of a centenary celebration. Blackpool has a popular tramway (trollie) that runs along to the coast to some of the other beach communities. The Blackppol Tramway was for many years England's only working tramway. There has been a revival of tramways in England and several other cities in recent years have rebuilt their tramways. The Blackpool Illuminations held during September and October are extremely popular even after the main tourist season.

Three Piers

English seaside resorts are famous for their holiday piers with a range of attractions. Often the attractions are centered on piers. The rides and other games particularly appeal to children, but there are attractions for the entire family. Blackpool has three piers. The North pier is the oldest of the three piers. It wa built in 1863. It is also the longest of the three piers. It was originally intended as a promenade, meaning just a plce for vacationers to walk out on for an ocean view, sea air, and to meet others. With the construction of Central Pier, the owners had to add more attractions which at first were theatres and bars. Unlike Blackpool's other two which focusd on the working classes with open air dancing and amusements, North Pier oriented tioward the 'better-class'" market and hosted orchestral concerts and 'respectable' comedians. It was the only Blackpool pier that regularly charged admission until 2011. The Central Pier was built soon after the North Pier in 1868. It has an array of attractions, amusements, shows and shopping, It is destinctive with a ferris wheel the iconic Big Wheel, but this is a recent addition (1990). There is also Blackpool’s Number 1 tribute show – Kings and Queens. The central location purs it at the heart of the Blackpool coastline. The South Pier inagurated as Victoria Pier is one of three Blackpool piers. It is the newest of the three piers, built in 1893. It is located on South Promenade along the South Shore. It has several amusement and adrenalin rides. It opens each year from March to November and is owned by The Sedgwick family. Beach

There was of course also the beach. Here is another Blackpool image from the late-1940s and early 50s (figure 1). Mum and Gran are paddling with a young boy. A reader tells us, "The illuminations is not a firework show. Its electric light illuminations. Pictures and patterns made up of different coloured bulbs. Each year there is a different theme. Day coach (bus) trippers go to Blackpool in the Autunm and stay until dusk. The coach drives along the route and everyone enjoys the seeing the illuminations. Some years have better displays than others."
