Belgian First Communion Suit: Felixe Govart--1938 Suit

Figure 1.--This Belgian boy was photographed in 1938. He wears a rather formal black suit ith a button-on collar. Also note that he does not wear a sleeve bow as was common in France. This boy wore white gloves with his black suit.

Individual Boy

This boy in this portrait appears to be Felixe Govart, at least this is written on the back of the portrait. The portrait was taken in 1938 by Joseph Apers in Boom. These names suggest tht this boy was Waloon (French speraking). His elegant, formal suit suggests that he was from an affluent family. We have no further information on this boy. He looks to be 11-12 yeats old.

Outfit

Felixe wears rather an elegant black three-piece single breasted short pants suit for his First Communion.

Cap

I do not know if Felixe wpre a cap with his First Communion suit, or if he did what style it was.

Suit

This boy wears a very formal looking single breasted black suit with matcing black kneesocks. The jacket has a regular cut, but with wide lapels. The black jacket looks a bit like a tuxedo. Wide lapels were considered rather stylish. The suit includes a matching blackk vest (waistcoat). This suit looks rather formal. We suspect that he probably had one or more patterened suits which were worn to school or for more informl occassions. This suit may have been purchased specifically for First Communion, but could be worn for other occassions such as weddings or perhaps going to church on Sunday. He has white goves to complement his forml suit.

Tie

The boy wears a standard necktie which looks to be black, matching the suit.

Shirt

The boy ears a long leeve white shirt. The most destinctive feature is what looks to be a detachable collar. Th collar looks much like an Eton collar, although it is rounded rather then pointed.

Hosiery

This boys wears black kneesocks to match his suit. Note that they are not turn-over-top socks. Thy are, however, smartly pulled up.

Shoes

The boy wears neatly polished, low cut oxford shoes.

First Communion Items

The only First Communion item he has is a mass book.

Reader Comments

A French reader tells us, "This boy looks typical of the 1930s with the short pant quite long. Note that is mother was attentive, the shorts were smartly pleated, that was important in this time. Note also his white gloves in his hand. Note that the part of his hair is in right, normaly reserved for the girls ,but this rule was not follow by the boy of good family."
