French First Communion Suits: Essey la Côte--1964

Figure 1.--Here se see the children at the small village of Essey la Côte doing thir First Communion in 1964. The children are wearing white cassocks.

We do not yet have much information on First Communion outfits in the 1960s. We note children wearing white cassocks in a First Communion in a small village. Both the boys and girls wore similar outfits. Here we see three boys and five girls. A French reader tells us, "At this time (after Vatican II which ended in 1962) the communiants were dressed in cassocks during the ceremony and with their suit outside. They no longer wore the the traditional white armband. We have noted many French boys doing their First Communion in these cassocks, but less commonly the girls. This often seems to be the style when a school or small group decides to dress alike. It is usually not a style chosen when the mothers choose the First Communion outfit individually. We note that here our French reader reports that the boys had suits on under the cassocks. The village was Essey la Côte. This was a village located in the Vosges region of eastern France, a mountainous region. We have some information on the village school which was located inside the village hall. The name of the chuch is Notre Dame de Bon Secours. A Canadian reader writes, "This picture is interesting. Vatican II broke down all those ceremonies like if First communion was a Marriage. There is something here which is near Protestants in the sense that the Catholic Church came back to simpler rituals oriented on spiritual values than social ones."
