Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Otto Haslund (Denmark, 1842-1917)

Figure 1.--We note a 1904 portrait of presumably a Danish boy who looks to be wearing an Eron collar with a large white bow. Such large bows with Eton collars were going out of fashion in the 1900s.

Otto Haslund is a respected Danish artist. He won a varierty of medals for his work and became a professor in the Royal Danish Academy of Art. We note a masterly executed 1904 portrait of presumably a Danish boy who looks to be wearing an Eron collar with a large white bow.

Artist

Otto Haslund is a respected Danish artist. As a young artist he travelled widely to Germany (Berlin and Dresden) in 1871, to Italy several times, Paris, Vienna, and London. His work won several important prizes, including the Neuhausen Prize (1871 AND 1881,) the Thorvaldsen Medal (1887), the Ancker Medal (1906)and the bronze medal in Paris (1889). Haslund was appointed a professor in the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1894. He exhibited at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen during 1865-1916, and several other important Danisg exhibituins. He also exhibited in Vienna (1882), the World Exhibition in Paris (1889 and 1900), the World Exhibition in Chicago (1893) and at several other international events.

Portrait

We note a masterly executed 1904 portrait of presumably a Danish boy who looks to be wearing an Eron collar with a large white bow. The boy is unidentified and looks to be about 14 years old. The boy had cropped hair brushed back. He wears a stark Eron-style black jacket and white shirt with what looks like a crisp Eton collar. Rather unsusually he wears a rather large white bow with his Eton collar. Such a bow especially in the 1900s was unusual for America and Britain. Perhaps it was more common in Denmark at the time.

Comments

A reader writes, "Interesting to see my grandfather's painting as an illustration of boy's clothing. Doubt if that is what he had in mind but still interesting. The word "Danish" needs help in the description." -- Peter Haslund
