Edvard Lehmann was a Danish artist, illustrator and lithographer. He is mostly known for his his illustrations of Danish theater. Otto was born in Copenhagen (1815). His father was miniaturist Johan Peter Christian Lehmann. His mother was Johanne Lassen. Lehmann entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1828). The family was of Jewish origins, we think oiginating in Germany. The Lehmann name is more familiar to Americans as an imprtant finanical firm. The Jewish ancestry is interesting because outside of the Netherkands, Jews were just beginning to be vaccerpted into national life. Note the Christian in his faher's name. His artistic career began at the Royal Danish Theatre as a costume draughtsman (1840). He collaborating with August Bournonville. His many drawings and watercolors make an important contribution to the history of Danish theater during wagt is seen as the Danish Golden Age. Lehmann was also an active portraitist. We note a few portraits of children. He also painted delightful genre scenes of Copenhagen street life. He never married and thee were no children.
