Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: K. Tkackenko (Tajikistan, 1930s)

Figure 1.--We note work by K. Tkackenko. We are not sure rather to classify him as a Russian or Tajik artist. He provides us images of Tajikistan in the 1930s, including one of a Tajik school. We have very little chronological information about Tajik education. Modern secular education is a relatively recent phenomenon. We do have a painting of a village school done about 1934 in which the children are in traditional dress.

The painting looks like the 19th century, but may not be that old. The first Western dressed people appeared about 1927 in Tajikistan. Dushanbe was a 3 year old city then. The first car appeared in 1934. . I think this painting is about the Russian education system which brought scholarship children from the villages to be educated in Dushanbe.

The Artist

We note this work by K. Tkackenko. We know virtually nothing about this artist. We are not sure rather to classify him as a Russian or Tajik artist. His name sounfs Russian to us. He provides us images of Tajikistan in the 1930s, including one of a Tajik school. He may have done scenes of other Soviet Republics as well. At this time this painting is all we know about the artist.

Chronology

We have very little chronological information about Tajik education. The painting was done in 1934 which we know because it is written on the back of the painting. Of course not all paintings depict contemporary times. In this case we can tell that it depicts a scene well after the Revolution (1917-21) because we see Lennin's portrait on the wall. We can also tell it was probbly before the late 30s because we believe it was at this time that we begin to see Stalin's portrait appearing all over the country.

Tajik Education

The painting looks like the 19th century, but may not be that old. The first Western dressed people appeared about 1927 in Tajikistan. Dushanbe was a 3 year old city then. The first car appeared in 1934. A reader writes, "I think this painting is about the Russian education system which brought scholarship children from the villages to be educated in Dushanbe in a boarding environment." To HBC the classroom looks more like a village school.
