Here we see two unidentified English boys on an outing with their very large pooch. The posing suggests a well-to-do family living on a substantial estate. It was painted by an unknown English folk artist. The artist is somewhat more accomplished than American folk artists. There is no provenance available. It surely dates to the mid-19th century. We would guess that it was painted in the 1840s, but we are not at all sure. We have archived a number of British images wih boys wearing desses from the early-nd mod-19th century. Unfortunarly too few of have needed prviance and dates enable us reliably date the undated images. The boys are certainly brothers. They look to be about 2-3 years old. The age of the younger boy is easily assessed. Given that his brother is so much taller, 6-7 years old seems reasonable. We see their hats. Both boys are wearing dresses. The younger boy wears a bright red dress with a low neckline. His older brother wears a green dress with colored bands and a higher neckline. He seems to be also wearing pantalettes and has different hosiery and shoes. The youngr boy is not wearing pantalettes, at least ones that are long enough to be seen.
