We welcome any reader insights here. The potrait shoes a boy about 10 years old with his dog. The boy is well drawn, but the dog more amateurishly.

Here we have an unidentified English oil portrait. It is clearly a mid-19th century portrait. We would guess it was painted about 1840, probably the late 1830s or early 40s. We welcome any reader insights here. The potrait shoes a boy about 10 years old with his dog. The boy is well drawn, but the dog more amateurishly. For some reason the boy is holding the dog by his nose, a rather unusual pose. It is a useful portrait because his clothes are so well illustrated. He wears a short black jacket and white blouse. The jacket shows the Victorian influence with black becoming an important color. We casn't make out too much detail other than the short cut and it being open at the top. This style would change in the 1840s with the appearance of the cut away jacket wih the two sides attached at the collar. The very crisp white blouse has an open collar with wide pointed tips. As was common at the time he ears long trousers in a contrasting color. White seemds to have been a popular color. Also notice the short hir cut. The boy is clearly from an affluent family. Both the clothes and the fact he had his portrait painted demonstrate this,
