Enid Blyton: Unknown Illustrators

Figure 1.--Here is one of the Blyton books with the work of an illustrator that we can not yey identify. Homefully HBC readers will have some insights.

A HBC reader writes, "I hope that you can help with the following. I have been trying without success to identify a particular Enid Blyton book llustrator. Based on your website, it appears that you have some knowledge of Blyton illustrators. I am therefore hoping that you might be able to identify the artist or suggest other avenues that I could explore in order to discover the illustrator's identity. The illustrator is uncredited and as the British publisher of these (paperback) children's books is no longer in existence, I have not been able to get any information from them. Tony Summerfield of the Enid Blyton Society also lists the illustrator as unknown. The only information I have is as follows. The titles, The Blue Story Book, The Yellow Story Book, The Green Story Book, were first published by DRAGON BOOKS (Atlantic Book Publishing Co.) in 1971. The titles, More Twenty-Minute Tales, Amelia Jane Again, Mr. Meddle's Mischief, were first published by DRAGON BOOKS (Mayflower Books) in 1972. If you are unable to help, I would be grateful if you could let me have an e-mail address for anyone who may be able to." [Michelle] A librarian tells us, "There is usually, but not always information in the book. If the book shown in the image here (figure 1) is the 1971 Dragon version, this is the bibliographical listing."

THE GREEN STORY BOOK

ENID BLYTON

Book Description: DRAGON, LONDON, 1971. Soft Cover. JENNY CHAPPLE (illustrator).

The illustrator then would be Jenny Chapple. We do not yet know anything about her. Our librarian advises, "With the book you can tell a great deal. Readers can look for exact publication year, publishing house and everything that might be useful. If available the ISBN. With this data she should search meta search engines for antique and second hand books A helpful site is Eurobuch.

Niccola writes, "Thank you for your efforts thus far. However, JENNY CHAPPLE did not illustrate the covers. She did the interior illustrations. Mary Gernat illustrated the covers of earlier paperback editions. As mentioned in my first e-mail, I have had no success in determining who illustrated the particular covers that I sent you. Please let me know in the event you do." [Michelle]
