This French boy, E'tiene Carjat, was photographed in 1869. He wears a stripped dress with extensive embroidery, including a flower device offset at the waistband. We know nothing about the boy, except that he looks to be about 4-5 years old. He wears patterned stockings with his dress. Note that his hair has been cut short. This shows that as in other countries, some boys had their curls cut before they were breached. Other boys were breached before their curls were cut. A French reader tells us, "The real name is
Etienne Carjat. If my memory is good, he was a noted French portraitist in the 19th century. One can see some portraits made by him in several museums. Of course I not posiive that this boy ws the artist. Perhaps he just had the same name."
