Herbert and Kurt Hender (Germany, 1928)

Figure 5.--The final picture is dated July 1928 and is annotated 'links Kurt' The boys look to be about 6 and 10 years old. They wear matching long pants sailor suits. Although it is July, the suits look more like winterwear. The suits are worn without dickies. Notice Kurt's sailboat. Image courtesy of the MD collection. Click on the image for another view.

The final picture is dated July 1928 and is annotated 'links Kurt' The boys look to be about 6 and 10 years old. They wear matching long pants sailor suits. Although it is July, the suits look more like winterwear. The suits are worn without dickies. Presumably in the winter they would wear them with dickies. Unlike some of their other sailor suits, these were not traditionally styled, although they do have the three-stripe detailing. We wonder if these suits may have been based on dress uniforms worn by German sailors. The jackets have very elaborate double columns of buttons and there are waistcoats (vests underneath). Note that almost all of the buttons are purely ornamental. There are brass buttons on the waistcoats and sleeves. There is an embroidered rank on the sleeve, but I am not sure what that was. As in the other images, their sailor scarves are neatly done secured weith a little white tie. I am not sure how long the boys continued wearing identical sailor suits after this portrait was taken, as it is the last one we have. The boys still have their hair cut in identical bangs. The bangs are very meticulously done.
