Charles and Anne Jacols (United States, 1864)

Figure 1.--This portrait of Charles Marian Jacols (1856-1922) and Anne Margarita Jacoles, brother and sister, was painted in 1864. The hand writing is hard to read. We are not sure about the spelling of their last name. We know that they were Ameicans , but we are not sure where they were from. The trees in the background suggest a northern state.

This portrait of Charles Marian Jacols (1856-1922) and Anne Margarita Jacoles, brother and sister, was painted in 1864. The hand writing is hard to read. We are not sure about the spelling of their last name. We know that they were Ameicans , but we are not sure where they were from. The trees in the background suggest a northern state, as well as a rural community. Ann Wears a plaid dress with what looks like a small hoop. Charles wears a plain long pants suit. It is a two pieve suit without a vest. Notice how the jacket is wirn iopen, buttoning only at the top. Both outfits have very subdued colors. Both children have small white collars, the girl's is slightly ruffled. Both have small bows, the girl's has tails. Both have rather short hair. The girl has a center part, the boy twin side parts with the hair combed back at his forehead. I'm not an art expert and not exactly sure what this is so I'll try to describe the look of the colors. I think it's a gouache or at least a gouache and watercolor. The colors are vibrant, unlike the washed out look of a plain watercolor and it's very detailed. The background colors appear to be flat with a sheen on top of some of the flat colors. A slightly thicker, shiny paint can be seen on top of the brown vertical lines of the girl's dress, on the edges of their hair, shoes, the shadows of their clothes and the fir tree next to the girl, etc. It isn't signed but the back has writing on it telling who they are, their ages/birth & death dates and stating that it was done by a visiting artist in 1864. I believe a visiting artist means an itinerate artist. It was framed by Suder's Art Store in Cincinnati, Ohio but I have no idea when. I'm sure it isn't a recent framing since it appears to have the original paper backing with a vintage Suder's Art Store sticker on it.
