Figure 1.--Here we see William Lowe about 1892-93. He and a younger brother wear matching sailor suits. We are not sure about the younger brother's name, probably Howard.. The boys wear sailor suits with dickeys, sailor caps, long black stockings, and hightop shoes.

Howard and William Lowe (United States, 1884- )

We have some interesting photographs of the Lowe brothers, Howard and William. We don't know anything about them except that they lived in Paterson, New Jersey. William was born January 15, 1884. He had a younger brother named Howard. I have not been able to identify the boys' parents. A portrait taken about 1891 shows the boys in identical sailor suits with dickeys, sailor caps, long black stockings, and hightop shoes. Other portraits show the boys as teen agers wearing suits.

Family

Unfortunately we know virtually nothing about the Lowe family, except that they lived in Patterson, New Jersey. Patterson is a city in northern New Jersey located near New York. I am not sure, but with the construction of bridges accross the Hudson, cities like Paterson became closely tied to New York City. The way the boys are dressed, it is apparent that the Lowe family was a prosperous, well established family. We note a William Lowe in the 1900 Census who lived in Patterson. I don't see a Howard but he did have a little brother and sister. He lived in Paterson Ward 1, Passaic, New Jersey and was 12 years old, which would mean tht he was probably born in 1888. We know he was born in New Jersey. He was the son of William (57) and Elizabeth Lowe (50). Other family members included: Cornelius Lowe (32), Hannie Lowe (21), Herbert Lowe (18), Tunis Lowe (15), Maud Lowe (8), and John Lowe (6 ).

The Brothers (early 1890s)

The first photograph shows who we think is William and a younger boy, almost certainly as they are dressed alike a brother. The portrait is undated, but we think was taken about 1893. We stress, however, that this is only a guess. We believe the older boy is William, although we are not positive. If he is William this would mean the portrait was taken about 1893. (William was born in 1884 and as he looks about 8 years old, this would mean that the portrait was taken in 1882-83. The boy here does look like the 1902 photograph we have of William. The boys wear identical sailor suits with dickeys, sailor caps, long black stockings, and hightop shoes. The caps look different, but actually are the same, only worn differently. The suits are light colored, but not white. We are unsure what color they might have been. Light blue is a likely possibility, but these suits were done in other colors as well. Thevbnoys have musical instruments (a drum and a coronet) which were presumably studio props. The picture was taken in New York City. Patterson is located close to New York City. Presumbably the portrait was taken during an outing to the city.

William (about 1902)

(2) The second photo shows William Lowe about 1902 when he was about 18 or 19 years old. Notice the high lapels of his suit, the stiff white detachable collar worn with a patterned neckband shirt, and tie with a stick pin. The center part of the hair is typical of the time. This might have been a highschool graduation portrait. It was taken in Paterson, New Jersey, William's home town.

Howard (about 1921)

The third photo is of Howard Lowe, taken in Paterson, New Jersey, about 1921. Howard seems to have been William's younger brother, but we are not entirely sure. This is a confirmation photograph. Notice the belted double-breasted dark suit worn with a white shirt, white tie, and white detachable collar. He wears matching above-the-knee knickers, long black stockings, and hightop black shoes. Howard also wears a white handkerchief in his breast pocket and a white flower in his buttonhole. The photo seems to have taken when Howard was about 14, the usual age for confirmation.
