English Boys' Clothes: Vintage Scottish Suit--Glengary Bonnet

Figure 1.--Here is the Glengary cap that went with this London-made Scottish Huigland outfit page. Click on the image to the the inside of the lined cap with the company logo.

The Glegary binnet was a popular cap style to be worn with Highland outfits. This suit came with an all black Glengary that matched the jacket.

Outfit Glengary

The Glengary bonnet with this Highland outfit was a classic Scottish cap. It was all black one without the dicing one often sees on these caps. There appears to be some kind of satin or silk decorative device on the front left side. It was made in black velvet to match the jacket. Likeall Glengaries, there was a black streamer. It was lined in silk or satin. The Glengary cap has a label on the inside that reads: HYAM & Co. limited-138 & 140 OXFORD ST., LONDON.

The Glengary Bonnet

The Glengarry bonnet is a blue woolen cap creased through the crown, like today's overseas cap. It first appeared in 1805 in Glengarry, Invernesshire, Scotland. The cap has stiff sides and bound edges, finished with short ribbons hanging in back. The cap is of course associated with Scotland and worn with Highland kilt outfits. We have also noted boys in America, England, and France wearing them siring the 10th century. Presumably they were also worn in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and other British colonies. American boys would wear them with other outfits besides kilts. The Glengarry bonnet is still worn today, primarily as part of ceremonial uniforms like pipe bands.
