French Boys Clothes: Charles--Clothes My Uncle Chose

Figure 1.--I don't realy remember this outfit and the photo. At the back it is witten "janv. 1949". It seems the weather was mild. I am wearing a velvet shorts set. I think it was a one piece outfit. The outfit includes a white blouse, white gloves, and white kneesocks.

I remember going through some of my old clothes that I found a few years ago in my uncle's house. It was in fact very emotional for me. I reconized some of them. I also noticed that almost all of the clothes weren't ones made in my parents factory. The only exception was my last romper suit. I think my uncle preferred to buy items himself or have them made. Perhaps they were gifts of his relations. I had a very large wardrobe ("trosseau") for a boy my age. This was not very commom for a boy at this time. Clothes were expensive and the economy had not yet recovered from the War. Many did not yet have good jobs.

Velvet Outfit

I don't realy remember this outfit and the photo. At the back it is witten "janv. 1949". It seems the weather was mild. I am wearing a velvet shorts set. I think it was a one piece outfit. The outfit includes a white blouse, white gloves, and white kneesocks.

Rompers

I remenber wearing the suspender rompers like the ones shown in the HBC romper pages. The ones I remember were the suspender rompers with a blouse, not the barboteuse romper suits with the back tieing bows. (I wore those when I was a little younger. I especially remember wearing the suspender rompers to a school fête in Nice. Fati, my uncle ,attended as part of his official duties. I remember being invited to come on the dais for a prize giving ceremony. Many women kissed me and told me how seet I looked. I was 5 and a half years old. Our Spanish made who was more like a nanny yto me was also there.

Sailor Suit

I also had a bitton on saolor suit. The blouse was white and trimmed in blue and red. The short pants were blue. This is not one of the garments I remember well, but I have a photograph of me dressed in my sailor suit. My uncle had brought me along with him to visit a naval base. Perhaps I only wore this suit on special occassions. I'm not sure if I had any other silor suits. Athough my memory is rather good on many aspects of my childhoodwellI, I don't remember this salor suit at all. I know I wore it, because I have a photograph of myself wearing it when I was 9 1/2 years old. A bit strange. I remember mamy insignificant events nd have forgotten many more imprtant things. Interestingly I remember wearing romper suits when I was much younger, but not this sailor suit.
