German Family Trends: Chemnitz Family--The 1910s

German family
Figure 1.--This cabinet photo shows the children of a German family, two girls and two boys, in white summer outfits. The boys werar very similar sailor suit. Even with the white outfits the children wear black long stockings.

Here we see a family in Chemnitz, a city in eastern Germsny--in Saxony. The portrait is undated, but the dealer believes the 1910s. We suspect it was taken during Wirkld War Ii, in part because the aduklt male figures are not present. A dealer writes, "Schnes Kabinettfoto von zwei Mdchen und zwei Knaben in feiner Kleidung, wie die 'Orgelpfeifen' aufgestellt! Atelier Paul Papesch, Chemnitz! Rckseite mit Atelier-Aufdruck!". This cabinet photo shows the children of a German family, two boys sanwiched between the two girls. They look to the grandchildren of the elderly lady in the portrait. Thy all wear white summer outfits. The boys wear very similar sailor suits. Even with the white outfits the children wear black long stockings. The Germans use the term 'organ pipes' to describe the pose of the children by height. All we know about the portrait is that it was taken at the Studio Paul Papesch in Chemnitz. They look to be about 5-11 years of age. Thet all seem to be wearing white summer outfits. The boys werar very similar sailor suit with short hair cuts. Note the plain white dickies. They seem to be not the compfortable dickies commonly worn, but a stiffer kind that comes up high on the neck. We have only noted German boys wearing this style. The boys' sailor "V" collars is done in dark blue with four rather than the traditional three stripes. Note that the younger boy has sleeve trim, but not the older boy. One boy has cropped hair while his younger brother has bangs. Notice that the boys' sailor suits look just slightly darker than the girls' dresses. It is possible that their suits may be a light blue. Remember that even a dark blue could show as a very light color with 19th century films. The girls wear identical dresses and hair bows, a popuar fashion at the time. Their hair bows are both white, but different. The girls have a locket and necklace. Even with the white outfits the children wear black long stockings. The Germans use the term 'organ pipes' to describe the pose of the children by height. All we know anout the portrait is that it was taken at the Studio Paul Papesch in Chemnitz. Notice the little sister is holding the hoop which I am guessing was a studio prop.
