German Knee Pants: Age--6 Years

Figure 1.-- Here we see a German boy dressed in a knee pants outfit for his first day of school. He would have been 6 years old. The photograph is undated, but we would guess it was taken in the 1910s, perhapds before World War I.

Long pants seem quite common in Grmany duting the late 19th century, but knee pants by the 1890s were increasingly common for boys. Most of the images we have found show primary school-age boys and younger teenagers wearing them. Most German boys begin school at age 6 years. Many of the images we have found of boys on their first day of school during the late 19th and early 20th century show boys wearing knee pants to school for their first day. They were worn with quite a variety of different outfits. Most boys during this period wore knee pants with long stockings.
