Greek Boys Clothes: Holidays--Summer Vacations

Figure 1.--This family snapshot shows local boys and visiting cousins on an island during summer vacations in the 1960s. All the boys are wearing shorts, t-shirt and have no shoes. This was typical 1950-60s for working class boys during summer vacations to small villages.

Summer vacations as in must of Europe have since World War II become a popular ritual. Gfreece like much of Western Europe is now much more urbanized than was the case in the early 20th century. Many city families spend their summer vacations in small rural villages. These are often villages where the parents grewup and the children's grandparents were born and/or still live. Trips to the Agean islands have also become very popular. Working-class boys on these vacations dressed simply. Usually just a plain "T"-shirt or sleevless undershirt and simple shorts. They usually went barefoot. Boys from more affluent families might dress more fashionably.
