Austrian Boys Clothes: Family Trends--Budapest Brothers Coordiated Outfits

Figure 1.--These Hungarian brothers were photographed in 1901. Notice how the to oldest boys wear identical suits. Here Pisti is about 10 years old, Viki is 6 years old and Villy 2 years old. The portrait was taken in Székesfehérvár, an ancient Hungarian town between Lake Balaton and Budapest. Villy seems to be holding a toy or is it flowers? Image courtesy of the MD collection.

Sometimes the younger brother had his outfit coordinated with the older boys. In several portraits of the family there is no effort at coordination whatsoecer--except for the identiacl short cropped hair styles. One image shows the younger boy in a white dress which in no way matches or coordinates with his older brothers suits. Many other inages show some effott at coordination, even for the unbreached boy wearing dresses. The effort at coordination varied widely. Sometimes it was only color or material with very different styles. Somerimes there were similarities in the detailing and or insignias used. On other occassions there are clear efforyts to coordinate stylistic elements. These coordinated styles were most common when the younger boy was still wearing dresses. Once he was breached, he was more likely to wear an identical outfit with his next older brother. We wonder if such matters were discussed by the family, either among the boys or the parents. Likely the younger boy not yet quite breached would have been quite proud to have elements of his dress coordinated wiuth his older brothers. Unfortunately, while we have quite a number of images of this family, we have no written information about them.

Note in the image here that the two older boys wear natty matching sailor suits with velvet collars and anchor insignia. There younger brother wears a completely different outfit--what looks to be a dress. There is, however, an effort to coordinate the outfit. It looks to be the same color and it has a velvet collar like the older boys' outfits worn with the same anchor insignia.
