Dutch Boys' Clothes: Suits

Dutch boys clothes
Figure 1.--This drawing from 1957 shows a Dutch boy wearing a short pants suit. Notice the hockey stick. Hockey is a very popular sport in the Netherlands. It helps identify the drawing as Dutch--an English would have more likely had a cricket bat while other European boys would not commonly been picturing wearing a suit with either.

Dutch boys used to wear suits more commonly than is the case today. Boys used to have much more limited wardrobes than is the case today, but many would have suits. Suits were worn for a wide range of occassions than is the case today. Suit styles appear to have been influence by English styles. Several different types of suits have been worn, including kneepants, short pants, knickers, and long pants. Jacket styling also varied over time. Younger boys wore short pants suits while older boys may have worn knicker suits--especially during the winter. Some boys wore suits to school, but this became less common in the 1950s.

Influences

Suit styles appear to have been influence by English styles. Unfortunately HBC at this time has no written sources in Dutch boys suits. Are assessmenr is nased on our assessment of thge inmages contributed by Dutch readers.

Jacket Style

Jacket styling also varied over time. We do not know of any destinctive Dutch jacket styles. Dutch boys have worn both single and doubled breasted jackets, although single breasted jackets have generally been the most popular. Dutch suit jackets appear to have gone through the same fashion cycles such as varying lapel changes as in the United States and other countries. A variety of trendy styles appeared in the 1960s. We have also noted Dutch boys wearing blazers, although not as commonly as in Britain and the United States. One blazer we noted in 1960 appaers to be made in the Eton style without lapels are perhaps it does not show up in the image. As in England after World War II, in the Nethelands Dutch boys began wearing suit jackets less commonly.

Pants Types

Several different types of suits have been worn, including kneepants, short pants, knickers, and long pants. The popularity of these types varied over time and among boys of different ages. There were many variations such as the length of the knee, short, and knicker pants and the cut of the long pants. The time line of these different suits types varied. To some extent one type relaced the other, but often to the extent they overlapped, they were worn by boys of different ages.

Chronology

Dutch boys commonly wore long pants suits through the nid-19th century. Suits could be worn quite tight in the early part of the centurt, but looser fits were more common by mid-century. Kneepants suits were common in the late 19th century. I'm not sure just when knicker suits appeared. Short pants suits gradually replaced kneepants syuits after the turn of the 20th century. Younger boys wore short pants suits while older boys may have worn knicker suits--especially during the winter. Boys in the 1950s gradually began to more commonly wear long pants suits. Short pants suiys were still worn in the 1960s, but by younger boys. Most boys by the 1970s were wearing

Younger Styles

A variety of specialized suit styles have appeared for youbnger boys. These were esebntially shorts sets, but not ones designed for play. The styles here have been quite varied, bit often employ style elements of the suits worn by older boys such as double breasted styling. These short suits have included suts with jackets as well as one-piece or button on pants--usually shorts.
