A HBC reader has provided us this snapshot of a pre-school Czech boy. This photo was taken somewhere in Czechslovakia (we don't know where) during 1927. I would say that this lad is about 5 years old. He is on holiday with his mother and aunt at the time the photograph was taken. It is difficult to be sure exactly what he is wearing, but he seems to have on a dark short-pants suit with
matching blouse and trousers. The blouse (or top) seems to have a large ribbon floppy bow, and he is wearing a long string of beads, somewhat unusual for a boy. I'm wondering whether he borrowed a string of beads from his mother or sister or some female friend. Young boys are sometimes delighted by traditionally female adornments. His shoes are interesting too. They seem to be made of some sort of felt and look a bit like slippers although they are clearly outdoor shoes. Note that cover his ankles. The boy is sitting on the low pediment of a building in some Czech town or city. He wears the very common tan long stockings made of cotton that we see so often in the late 1920s and
1930s in both Europe and America, and we can see the fasteners of his hose supporters showing beneath his short pants on his upper legs. When I first looked at this photo, I thought it might be of a girl, but the haircut and the short trousers almost certainly indicate a boy.
