Estonian composer Mart Saar (1882-1963) was a prominent Estonian composer, organist, and music teacher and is widely seen as a founder of Estonian professional music. We see Saar standing with his wife and their five children. At the time, Estonia had first achieved its independence.

Here we have a family portrait of the close-knit Saar family. Estonian composer Mart Saar (1882-1963) was a prominent Estonian composer, organist, and music teacher. He was a central figure in the Estonian national romantic movement and is widely seen as a founder of Estonian professional music. At the time, Estonia had first achieved its independence. We see Saar standing with his wife and their five children. The family members from left to right are: Ester, Mrs. Saar, Heli, Mart Saar, Tiiu, Ants, and Maret. There are four girls and one boys. The girls all have long hair and hair bows. Ants has close-cropped hair as was common in Eastern Europe (19th and early-20h century). The girls all wear dresses. The younger girls wear white dresses with embroidered designs popular in Eastern Europe. Ants wears a collar buttoning suit jacket with double-breasted buttons, an Eton collar, and casually tied floppy bow.
