The Canton Appenzell is located in the eastern area of the north-central region of Switzerland. Appenzell is located both a canton (actually two half-cantons) and a town of 5,000 located east of Zurich. City residents make jokes about country bumkins in Appenzell. This is the German speaking region. Farming in very important in the region and is mostly dairy-farming. The outfits seen here were still very much the kind of clothing they wore around the early years of the 20th century. Now boys only wear them on Sundays, Holidays and special occasions. It is not an outfit which you see infrequently. The boy are very proud of the unique clothing and wear the garments a lot. The pants are kind of breeches which are tied just below the knees and are of a dark yellow color. They wear either white tights or long socks with them. The pants are held up with the leather suspenders/halter with the cow designs on the cross-piece. Around the waist they tie a scarf which again depicts the alpine activities with the cows. On top they wear a white shirt and the vest is red. The head-cover is either a black leather beanie or a black felt hat. Most boys or men have their left ear pierced and wear a very distingt pendent in that ear. We notice Swiss Boy Scouts from a different canton wearing folk garments.
