United States Boys' Clothes: Unidentified Boy (New York, 1860s)

Figure 1.-- This fascinating CDV from the 1860s show what looks like a 9-10 year old boy, we think with his grandparents. The family was unidentified, but we know they were from Cooperstown, New York. We also note the portrait was taken during the 1860s because there is a Federal revenue stamp on the back. As with many early CDV, there was no studio information on the front of the card mount. Even without the revenue stamp, the blank front helps to date the card.

We also note the portrait was taken during the 1860s because there is a Federal revenue stamp on the back. In fact it defines the date of the image from 1864-66. As with many early CDV, there was no studio information on the feont of the card mount. The boy has a cut-way jacket which he wears with a shirt that has a small collar and bow. His long pants do not match the jacket. He has a relatively short hair cut, but down to his ears at the side. This grandfather wears a frock coat with a stick. His grandmother wears a a voluminous hoop-skirt dress.
