Carl's Sailor Suit Dickey, 1900

Figure 1.--Here we can see Carl with his sailor suit dickey. Notice the embroidered anchor emblem. The dickey was optional durung the Summer, but would have been worn with a unionsuit. Click on the image for a back view.

One of the least obvious parts of a sailor suit was the dickey. It is also the least known as mist of it is covered up. The dickey (also referred to as a shield) was the visible bit between the "V" of the sailor collar. Dickeys were done in different ways. They could be plain, have a embroidered emblem, or stripes. The actual garments were constructed differently. The one hown here was ptobably done as a kind of sleeveless under vest. The front and back might be done in different materials, but this was probably not the case for the striped dickeys popular in Europe. There was an element of seasinality involved with a dickey. They were almost always worn with blue heavy-weight Winter suits. The summer was different. They might also be worn in the Summer, but sometimes Summer suits were wrn without a dickey. The dickey was optional durung the Summer, but would have been worn with a unionsuit. Here we are specualing as to Carl's dickey. We have seen dickey's done like this, but are not sure just how common they were. We commonly see the exposed pat in portraits and catalog sales catalog. Actual images of the dickies are very rare. We do not yet have a page on American sailor suit dickies, but we do have a general sailor suit dickey page.
