John's Vest and Suspenders, 1900

Figure 1.-- John's suit had a vest or waistcoat. Vests were very common at the time. They had fabric matching the suit at the front and silk or satin lining material at te back. Suspenders were very common for both boys and adults. They would have been worn under the belt. In looking at thousands of portraits from the late 19th and early 20th cebntury, I have never seen a boy wearing suspenders over a belt. Click on the image for a rear view.

John's suit had a vest or waistcoat. Vests were very common at the time. They had fabric matching the suit at the front and silk or satin lining material at te back. Often there would be a belt at the back to help tighten the vest for a better fit. Click on the image for a rear view. Here we are somewhat unsure about what the rear of the vest looked like in 1900. We have no back views in our image archive. We are guessing here based on suits we know if from the 1940s. John's trousers would have probably been held up by suspenders or braces. Suspenders were very common for both boys and adults. They would have been worn under the vest. In looking at thousands of portraits from the late 19th and early 20th cebntury, I have never seen a boy wearing suspenders over a belt. Actually he is shown wearing a "suspender waist", not merely suspenders, for his knee pants. Notice that the white shoulder straps continue to his waist line and below where the straps become hose supporters. The shoulder strap of the suspenders and the strap of the hose supporters is the same elastic strap which is continuous. This is why the suspenders shown here are white and not colored or striped as ordinary suspenders would probably be. I think this point becomes clear in the the earlier drawing showing John in his underwear and stockings and support gaRMENTS.
