Uniforms Garments: Blazers--Colors and Patterns

Figure 1.--Blazers were done in a wide range of colors, often bright colors. We found blue, black, brown, green, grey, pink, red, and yellow blazers. This day school had a bright red blazer with a thin red stripe.

Blazers were done in a wide range of colors, even quite bright colors. We believe this was once even more varied than in the 1980s when most of our school visits occurred. We still noted quite a range of colors, including blue, black, brown, green, grey, pink, red, and yellow blazers. The various colors were done in a variety of shades. Blue in particular was done in various shades. We believe that in general the colors were becoming mote muted. There were even stripped blazers done in various colors. The stripes were done in various colors and stripe withs. Another option was a bright color with a narrow black stripe. Black blazers by the 1980s were becoming somewhat more common than earlier, in part because the stripped blazers were more expensive. Navy blue blazers were the most common. We also some black blazers like the ones commonly worn at state secondary schools. Generally more colorful blazers were worn at the prep schools. In fact prep schools were known for their brighty colored blazers. Boys once commonly wore matching caps. Normally the caps were the same color as the blazer or coordinate with them. Caps by the 1980s were, however becoming much less common.

Colors

Blazers were done in a wide range of colors, even quite bright colors. We believe this was once even more variety than that which we observed in the 1980s when most of our school visits occurred. We still noted quite a range of colors, including blue, black, brown, green, grey, pink, red, and yellow blazers. The various colors were of course done in a variety of shades. Blue in particular was a very popular color for school blazers and done in quite a number of different shades. We believe that in general the colors were becoming mote muted. Navy blue blazers seem to have been the most common single color at prep schools. Black was worn at some ptrep much more prevalent at senior (secondary) schools, especially stsate primaries.

Stripes

There were even stripped blazers done in various colors. Some of these stripped blazers were quite destinctive. This normally was two colors, but there were blazers with three colors. The stripes were done in various colors and stripe withs. Another option was a bright color with a narrow black stripe. These stripped blazers have tended to decline in popularity because they were more expensive than a single colored blazer. Only a few of the schools we visited has stripped blazers.

Black Blazers

Black blazers by the 1980s were becoming somewhat more common than earlier, in part because the stripped blazers were more expensive. We also see some black blazers like the ones commonly worn at state secondary schools. Black blazers were very common at state secondary schools. Some of these schools have retaied older styles, but msany adopted a standard black blazer. Generally more colorful blazers were worn at the prep schools. In fact prep schools were known for their brighty colored blazers. While some prep schools have adopted blaxk blazers, many continue to have more varied blazers.

Matching Caps

Boys once commonly wore matching peaked caps with their blazers. Normally the caps were the same color as the blazer or coordinated with them. Some caps were done in wedges or cirlcles. Normally an element of the resulting color comination matched the blazer. We noted one school which had both blazers and grey suits. The cap worn with both the blazer and grey suit matched the blazer. Schools with stripped blazers tended to have solid-colored caps. Caps by the 1980s were, however becoming much less common. The once pervasive school cap for some reason became rather unpopularr with boys. Most schools had a formal uniform with the blazer or suit, but without any headwear. The schools when they discontinued caps, discontinued headwear all together.
