There were numerous German reprisal actions. As the occupation continued and the Resistance gew in strenth and carried out more attacks. The number and intensity of the German reprisals escalated. The reversals on the Eastern Front and the approach of the Red Army undoubtedly affected thhe German tactics. Another factor was the difficulties associated with large-scale anti-guerilla operations. The inability of the Germans to conduct decisive military operations against the guerillas left them with expedient od simply taking our vicious reprisals on innocent and easily targeted civiians. One especially vicious action was the masacre of the villagers at Komeno (August 1943). Others reprisals include Mikro Chorio (1943) and Distomo (1944). The number of burned villages is far high to mention them all one by one. In many cases the details of specific actions taken on villages are not readily available. The reprisal actions varied widely, depending on who was conducting the action. The Germans were more brutal than the Italians and the SS was mlre brutal than the Wehrmacht. Also the nature of the Resistance attack they were reponding to and the number of Germans killed and wounded was another factor. A Greek reader is compiling some information. In some cases only a few men were killed. In one village 14 men were executed. In others all the men were shot. Sometimes women were also shot, but the children spared. In others the entire population was murdered without exceptions.
