English Mail Order Catalogs and Clothing Advertisements with Boys Clothing: Chilprufe Children's Coats (1952)

Figure 1.-- We notice an advertisement by Chilprufe for children's coats. They describe utility and non-utility cloths. This is not a company we know anything about at this time. I am not sure, but I think that means fabrics suitable for both play and dress clothes. The ad illustration shows a younger boy in a dressy beret and coat. The style shown here looks like the coats Prince Charles who was very young at the time was wearing.

We notice an advertisement by Chilprufe for children's coats. They describe utility and non-utility cloths. This is not a company we know anything about at this time. I am not sure, but I think that means fabrics suitable for both play and dress clothes. The ad illustration shows a younger boy in a dressy beret and coat. The beret was dressy garment younger children wore with coats like this, at least in England. The style shown here looks like the coats Prince Charles who was very young at the time was wearing. It was a classic dressy style worn by boys and girls from affluent families. The ad copy read, "Chilprufe. An attractive range of Coats for Children in Utility and non-Utility cloths, stylishly designed and beautifully cut, made in a charming range of colours with generous hems and smart accessories." The price was 98/6 (shillings and pence). Apparently the clothes were only sold theough one retail outlet, Chopes of Bideford. We also know nothing about the retailer except that Bideford is in Devon, but both the manufacturer and retailer seem to be small operations. The coat here was a style for a younger boy. The ad does not indicate age levels. We believe that they were primarily pre-school boys up to about 5 years of age. Girls may have worn them to an older age.
