La Samaritaine Toys (July 1939)

Figure 1.--Here we see a Red Indian used to catch attention for the La Samaritaine's toy selection.

The big Fremch department stores also sold toys. The catalog pages for toys also included illustrations of children depicting contemprary clothing. We note a Samaritaine adverisement dates July 1939. I'm not sure if it is a advertisement or a catalog cover. It show how popular American Indians at the time were in France and for that matter other European countries. I think this was in part a function of Hollywood movies. Indians were often referred to as Red Indians in Europe and now of course we prefer Native Americans.

Samaritaine

The big Fremch department stores also sold toys. Here is an add from La Samaritaine, an important Paris Department store. We note a Samaritaine adverisement dates July 1939. I'm not sure if it is a advertisement or a catalog cover. La Samaritaine is either the earliest or at least one of the earliest department stores ever built. Situated in the historic center of Paris, between the Louvre and Châtelet and opposite the Ile de la Cité, the famous department store got its name from an old water pump near the Pont Neuf.

Clothing

The catalog pages for toys also included illustrations of children depicting contemprary clothing. Here we see several children in popular outfits. Note the boy wearing a sailor suit. Another boy wears a weater and short pants with white kneesocks. The girl wears a dress. More casual clothing styles were not yet common for girls.

Toys

Most of the toys here shown here shows were popular toys in many countries. I'm sure our reders will recognize most of them. Is it a good review of popular 1930s toys. I'm not sure what the Indian has under his right arm. Note the bowling game to the right. I think that was particularly popular in France. Perhaps our French readers can tell us more. HBC has a children's toy page. We do not yet have national toy pages or chronological toy pages.

Cowboys and Indians

Growing up in America, I assumed Cowboys and Indians wThe La Samaritaine ad here shows how popular American Indians at the time were in France and for that matter other European countries. Boys loved to play cowboys and Indians. Items like bows and arrows, drums, Indian costumes, and feather head dresses were very popular. I think this was in part a function of Hollywood movies. Cowboy films were even popular in Germany. One German Enigma machine operator even set the beginning codes to TOM-MIX.

Native Americans

Indians were often referred to as Red Indians in Europe and now of course we prefer Native Americans. Of course the term "Red" indians was necessary in Britain to destinguish them from South Asian Indians. We have noted the term, however, in America and other European countries. Note how red the Native American here is depicted.
