La Redoute Dressy and Casual Shorts (1971)

Figure 1.-- La Redoute in 1971 offered four other styles of shorts. At least two of these seem rather dressy and the other two if not dressy seem somewhat more formal than the play shorts also offered. All four are in different styles and materials. The materials are a better grade than those used for the casual shorts.

La Redoute

La Redoute is an important Paris department store. The store was especially noted for its mail order catalog. One French reader has mentioned the "La Redoute" catalog was well known throughout France. The clothing offered is a good indicator of styles that were widely worn in France and by French people in overseas locations. The some styles were also widely worn in Belgium. Redoute was especially popular in the 1970s.

Fabric

The trademarks involved were Daltoskin® (imitation leather), Brinyl Hélanca®, Tergal® (Rhône-Poulenc), and Eural Tergal®.

Short Pants

La Redoute offered four styles of short pants. Two (styles C and D) seem especoally designed for dress or formal wear. One style is imitation leather. They were all cut much shorter than the Bermudas also offered, but were in different styles, and colors/patterns.

Style A: Imitation leather shorts

That translates as, " ????? ". They come in brown as showm, buth there were three other colors. The waist sizes are 102 cm, 114cm, 125cm, 138 cm, 150 cm, and 162 cm. I'm not sure what that means in ages. Prices range from F18.50-23.50. While they are imitation leater, they are not cut to resemmble lederhosen. In am not sure about the conventioins for wearing these shorts in France.

Style B: Boxer shorts

These boxer-style shorts without a fly are cut quite short. They are made in a light-weight polyester material and more expensive than basic boxer play shorts. Theu could be worn for dressy as well as casual occassions. The ad copy reads, "??? culotte Tergal en nylon (polyamide) Hélanica à petits carreaux, facile ??? entretenir. Ceinture élastique, 2 poches en biais. Plis nervurés." That translates as, " ??? ". They came in what looks like maroon as shown, but there was also another color. The waist sizes are 102 cm, 114cm, 125cm, 138 cm, and 150 cm. I'm not sure what that means in ages. Prices range from F13.50-15.50.

Style C: Dress shorts-selfbelt

These dressy shorts have a self-belt. The ad copy reads, "??? culotte Tergal en poluester et viscose de belle confection, entièrement doublée. Élastique au dos, ceinture à glissière à ??uette. 2 poches en biais." That translates as, " ????? ". They come in grey as shown, but there were two other colors as well. The waist sizes are 102 cm, 114cm, 125cm, 138 cm, 150 cm, and 162 cm. I'm not sure what that means in ages. These dress shorts were expensive. Note that in the La Redoute catalog, "short" is often used for play shorts and "culotte" for dressy shorts. Prices range from F29.50-37.00.

Style D: Dress shorts-selfbelt

This was another style of dress shorts. The cut looks quite simikar to the short oants, above, but in a different material, one with wool added to the polyester. They were the most exoensive short pants offered bt La Redoute. The ad copy reads, "??? culotte Eural Tergal en polyester et laine peignée, entièrement doublée ???ion (polyamide). 2 poches côtée, bragurtte à glissière, ceinture à ???, élastique au dos. Confection trés soignée." That translates as, " ???? ". ???? ". They came in navy blue as illustrated and another color, probably grey. The waist sizes are 102, 108, 114cm, 120, 125cm, 132, 138 cm, 144, 150 cm, 156, and 162 cm. I'm not sure what that means in ages. Note that they sizes were moire exactig here. Apparently this enabled parents to select a pair that provided a trom fit for formal dress occasions, Prices range from F32.00-42.00.
