German Mail Order Catalogs: Children's Sweaters, 1965

Figure 1.--This 1965 Otto Versand catalog showed a variety of sweaters for boys and girls. "V" neck sweaters seem especially popular.

This Otto Versand page offers boys' and gir's sweaters in various styles and and a boys' double-breasted jacket with no lapels.

Otto Versand House

The company advertizing these sweaters is the Otto-versandhaus. The Otto Versand Haus was founded about 1954 after World War II in Hamburg, Germany, by Werner Otto. We do not know of an actual store. This may b a purely catalog company. The company is apparently still in business and we note a website just for Otto. We had thought that Otto was a first name, but it may wll be the founder's last name. The Otto website includes this refereced a Micharl Otto, "Die Michael-Otto-Stiftung für Umweltschutz verfolgt als Ziel den Schutz und den Erhalt der Lebens-grundlage Wasser."

Garments

This page of the catalog offered sweaters for boys and girls. "V" neck pullovers seem especially popular. The syles for the girls are more varied, includng crew necks and cardigans. Nore that most of the boy models are shown with open collars. German boys did not commonly wear ties except for formal occassions. Thus it is a little curious to see so many "V" neck sweaters. The whole purpose of a "V" neck is so ties could be worn with it. We also note a blazer for a younger boy, made without lapels. It is called a "Clubjacke", te foreign term being used to give it a stylish image. It was abailable in sizes 104-164 cm.
