German mail order catalogs offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. German mail order catalogs show a major shift in German boys' clothing in the 1960s. Bous no longer wore short pants to dress wear. Shorts were increasingly becoming casual wear. I am not sure precisely when mail order catalogs first appeared in Germany.
We note German children wearing tights rather than long stockings in 1960. They may ahve appeared slightly earlier. Nore boys and girls wear them. Kneesocks appear to have been more common for cold weather, but stores in 1960s were also offereing tights.
Catalogs in 1961 offered both suspender pants and bib-front pants for younger boys. there were a variety of long pants fpr winter wear, including jeans. We also notice knicker-length pantsm but they were trim fitting, not the baggy knickers of the 1930s and 40s.
Younger boys might wear rompers and sunsuits. Peter Pan collars were popular. Older boys wore an interesting combination of traditional blazers, Mao jackets, and folk jackets. Pants often were made in short and long pants versions of the same styles. Some had supender or halter attachments.
Toddler boys still wore rompers, but there were also suspender long pants. Jean jackerts were the rage, signaling the increasing popularity of denim and casual styles. Solid colored "T" shirts were popular as well as many styles of sweaters. Lederhosen appear to have been very popular. Several styles were available, mostly in the shorter length popular for short pants.
